AJ and Thomas had hurriedly prepared the boat at the dock, filled it full of petrol, loaded fresh dive tanks and headed about five miles offshore towards Herbert’s pinnacle. They’d been sitting there waiting for over an hour when finally AJ’s phone lights up with a text from Reg.

‘Costa knows everything except location. Your Grandfather, everything. I’m leading them to west end of Bank. Will text when there. Wait until then. Time is short. Good luck.’

AJ re-read it aloud to Thomas. She looked at her watch, it was already two thirty in the afternoon and she was anxious to get started.

Thomas looked at her puzzled. “I thought it was just you that knew the story from your Grand Papi?”

“We’ve always figured that someone from the German side had to know the sub had gone rogue, I don’t understand how they’d know about my Grandad though.”

She felt bad not telling Thomas the last part of the story, the fact that the missing submarine had a clandestine cargo of Nazi gold aboard. Whoever was behind placing the treasure onboard would have certainly had an interest in where it ended up and there might well have been some record of it that survived the war.

Thomas came from a modest family who’d worked hard their whole lives to scrape by, surrounded by an ever growing display of wealth and extravagance from off-islanders and she wasn’t certain how he’d handle the temptation. In his situation who wouldn’t want to share in the opulence and grandeur the foreigners enjoyed on the island his family helped build?

AJ wasn’t lying to him but she was not including him on all the facts and however she justified it, it didn’t feel right. Despite her misgivings something told her now wasn’t the right time either.

“Sounds like Reg is steering them as far as he can away from us so we’ll just wait it out until he gives us the green light.”

Sitting, just bobbing on the waves waiting, was excruciatingly tedious and frustrating for AJ. She was like a kid at Christmas just itching to get in the water and explore the elusive pinnacle that had almost certainly never been dived by any other human. She just hoped it had been ascended by three other people, seventy two years before.

After what seemed like an eternity her phone lit up again with a text from Reg. ‘Go now’ was all it said.

Go now was all AJ and Thomas needed to hear and they leapt into action, heading full speed for the coordinates saved in her GPS. It was three forty in the afternoon.

Thomas drove while AJ got into her wetsuit and readied her gear so when they arrived at the location in the RIB boat’s GPS fifteen minutes later, she was ready to splash. On the surface a gentle current appeared to be drifting the boat east back toward the island so Thomas eased the boat further west to allow for it.

The moment of truth was here, AJ prepared to back roll off the side of the boat and did her last minute gear checks.
